On the nature of supernatural luck:

There is fortune and misfortune, but luck can always be described as some form of competence and most importantly context..

A middle-aged fat man stops into a 7/11 early one Tuesday morning on his way to work, his thoughts are filled with the painful fight he had last night with his ex-wife.  His heart was still stinging at some of the things she had called him, loser, idiot, poser, and queer.   He could still remember how sweet their life together had been.  How she used to kiss him on the chin every night before he rolled over to fall asleep.   Robotically he grabbed a cup and filled it with the dark blend, after assiduously sniffing the pot to ensure its freshness.  Cup in hand he joined the long queue at the register, and sank back into his growing financial gloom.

The line was delayed due to a small boy who was buying a super-sized pack of red and blue gummy worms, carefully and distrustful of the attendant a nickel or penney at a time. Finally reaching the head of the line he offer 2 dollar bills to pay the fee of $1.04 for steaming 16 ounce cup.   The attendant asked if he had 4 cents, and he started to search his pockets, but quickly gave up and hoped that the attendant would tell him to forget it and pay it next time.   But the attendant was new, and he was focused on doing everything right today, since he had been warned about his shortages at the staff meeting last night, and he really needed this job..  His wife was pregnant again, and his car was in bad need of an oil change.

His change is of 2 quarters, nine nickels and a penny.  He felt a bit insulted by all the nickels, and so he renewed his search for the 4 cents, finding it in his inside pocket.   But the attendant had moved on to the next customer, and simply ignored his protestations.  He pocketed the change and left.  He made a few other stops on his way to work, at the drugstore, and the cleaners and after these transactions he had been able to rid himself of most of the noisy small change.

He got home late that night, and thankfully his wife was already asleep.  He undressed and carefully put his small change on the silver tray on his nighstand, along with his watch, and car keys.  He noticed that one of the coins was shinier that the others, and that his watch was running a few minutes fast.  He sunk into the bed and slept the sleep of the righteous.

The next morning he arose quickly and silently trying not to wake his wife.  He dressed, and grabbed a quick breakfast bar.  On his way out of the door he scooped up his keys, watch and small change.  The odd shinny coin once more caught his attention.   In better times he had been an avid coin collector, so he took a moment and looked closely at the coin.   Long story short..the coin was worth almost $1,000,000.

Was he lucky?   It turns out that the coin was a penny that had be introduced into the money supply by a rich collector as a sort of test.  Would you have recognized that coin, or been one of the estimated 1000 other people who received the coin and passed it on>
